AKG C214: Legendary Performance in a Modern Jacket

In the world of professional audio, there is one microphone that is on almost every wish list: the AKG C414. The AKG C214 uses the exact same 1-inch capsule as its big brother, but focuses on a fixed cardioid characteristic. This makes the microphone not only more affordable, but also easier to use for the producer who simply wants the best possible recording quality without unnecessary extras. Whether recording an intimate vocal or capturing the raw energy of an acoustic guitar, the C214 delivers a detailed, upfront sound that sounds instantly “ready for the mix.”

Most important features

  • Legendary 1″ Capsule: Based on the iconic C414 electronics for that recognizable, clear and detailed sound.

  • Superior Dynamic Range: Can handle sound pressures up to 156 dB SPL (with pad enabled), ideal for loud sources such as guitar amps or drums.

  • Integrated Capsule Suspension: Reduces external mechanical noise and vibration, resulting in a cleaner recording.

  • Switchable Low-Cut & Pad: A 20 dB attention pad and a 160 Hz low-cut filter help you tackle rumble and overdrive right at the source.

  • Rugged Build Quality: An all-metal housing with a scratch-resistant finish, built to withstand years of intensive studio use.

  • Complete Studio Set: Comes complete with deluxe storage case, shockmount and windshield.

Why choose the AKG C214?

Choosing the AKG C214 is a choice for reliability. Where many cheaper condenser microphones have a sharp or “grainy” high, the C214 retains the silky smooth highs that AKG is known for. For the professional musician, this means voices come across more naturally and instruments retain their harmonic depth.

At i4studio, we often recommend the C214 as the first “real” investment for a home studio. It is a microphone that grows with you; from your first vocal demo to professional album recordings. Thanks to its cardioid characteristic, it is also less susceptible to reflections from the back, which makes it ideally suited for rooms that are acoustically imperfectly treated.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between the C214 and the more expensive C414? The C214 uses the same capsule technology, but has only one diaphragm (cardioid). The C414 has two diaphragms, allowing you to switch between nine different aiming characteristics. In terms of timbre, they are very close to each other.

2. Do I need a special power supply for the C214? Yes, like most condenser microphones, the C214 requires phantom power (48V). Virtually all modern audio interfaces and mixing consoles have this feature.

3. Is the C214 suitable for recording raps and vocals? Absolutely. The C214 is known for its slight “presence boost” in the highs, which allows vocals and rap vocals to cut through the mix beautifully without having to use a lot of EQ.

4. Can I also use this microphone for podcasting? Sure, but note that it is very sensitive. In an untreated room, it may pick up ambient noise. Use the included shockmount to prevent impact noise from your desk.

5. Is the housing sturdy enough for on-the-road recording? The C214 is very solidly built with a metal chassis. Thanks to the included case, you can safely transport it for shooting on location.
