The black lion “Bluey” is a modified “Blue Stripe” compressor based on Chris Lord-Alge’s well-known design and design. At some point, certain core components proved unavailable. This forced engineers to change the circuit and design, creating a unique compressor with a unique sound. Every audio engineer has stories about the special moments that happen to appear on records. We’re talking about the magic you can’t plan. It has to happen organically, and consists of pure randomness or even outright mistakes. For example, the spontaneous chatter of a vocalist between takes that adds character to a song, or a radically new audio effect discovered by a simple routing error.
The same luck sometimes shines through in the vintage gear world. Through decades of maintenance and repair, some units, such as wine, get better with time. Scarcity of original parts means engineers deviate from the original design, creating an improved, unique, custom unit.
Armed with an impeccable ear, years of experience and an abundance of coveted equipment, mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge could recognize that one of his four 1176 Blue Stripe units was firmly in this distinctive category. The specific unit, called “Bluey”, has a special “mojo” that shines on vocal tracks like no other.
Chris wanted more channels of this golden unit and contacted the team at Black Lion Audio! Intrigued by Chris’ praise of the unit, chief design engineer, Jesus Ortiz, boarded a plane from Chicago to LA. To discover what gave this Blue Stripe its edge.
He found a series of mods that had been done to the unit over the years to make it work that miraculously accumulated into a unique1176! BLA analyzed the unit in meticulous detail and, in collaboration with Chris Lorde-Alge, has recreated the monster, now known as the new Black Lion Audio “Bluey!”
