Boundless Sound Design with the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2
In the world of professional audio, few names command as much respect in the field of digital synthesis as Waldorf. With the Iridium Desktop MK2, they have translated the legendary architecture of the Quantum synthesizer into a more compact but equally powerful desktop format. This is not just any synthesizer; it is a deep sound design laboratory designed for the producer who refuses to settle for standard presets.
The Five Pillars of Synthesis
At the heart of the Iridium MK2 are three oscillators per voice, with five powerful synthesis shapes to choose from for each oscillator:
Wavetable: The classic Waldorf sound with endless modulation possibilities.
Waveform (Virtual Analog): For thick, classic oscillators with modern precision.
Particle (Granular): Ideal for creating atmospheric soundscapes and organic textures based on samples.
Resonator: For physical modeling and percussive, metallic sounds that come alive in the mix.
Kernel: An innovative engine for complex FM synthesis and oscillator interactions.
MK2: Refinement in Hardware and Workflow
The MK2 version of the Iridium builds on the success of its predecessor with subtle but crucial improvements. The industrial design is robust and exudes German thoroughness, while the high-resolution touchscreen makes the most complex operations intuitive. Sixteen-voice polyphony and full multi-timbrality allow you to create layered productions without ever running into technical limitations.
Seamless Integration into your i4-Studio
At i4studio, we see the Iridium MK2 as the perfect partner for our Custom DAW Workstations. With its extensive connectivity – including CV/Gate inputs for modular systems, MIDI In/Out/Thru and USB – the Iridium is the bridge between the analog and digital worlds. The built-in digital filters and effects section ensure that your sounds are “record-ready” right out of the machine, allowing you to spend less time on post-processing and more on creativity.
Technical specifications
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between the Iridium MK1 and the MK2?
The MK2 offers a refined hardware experience with an improved housing and higher-quality industrial buttons. In addition, internal memory and touchscreen response have been optimized for even faster workflow in demanding studio environments.
Can I use my own samples in the Iridium MK2?
Sure. Through the Particle engine, you can load samples (via USB or MicroSD) and transform them with granular synthesis. With this, the Iridium also acts as a very sophisticated sampler.
Is the Iridium MK2 suitable for live use?
Absolutely. The housing is extremely solid and the touchscreen is easy to read even under stage lighting. Thanks to the “Perform” section with pad controls, you can manipulate filters and effects live without diving deep into menus.
Does this device support MPE?
Yes, the Waldorf Iridium MK2 is fully compatible with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), allowing you to add unprecedented expression to your playing with suitable controllers (such as a Roli or LinnStrument).
