Warm Audio WA-67 Tube Condenser Microphone
WA-67: Another Legend Reborn
The original ’67 became one of the most sought-after and widely used studio microphones of its time, recording a huge collection of some of the most memorable songs of the past 50 years – we’re talking classic tracks from artists as varied as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Temptations and Nirvana! The original mics are still in demand, but they can run upwards of $8,000 for a pristine unit, putting them well out of reach for most recordists.
Fortunately, Warm Audio has now changed that scenario with the release of the new Warm Audio WA-67 ! Based on an EF86 pentode tube and with the same soft and creamy sound as the original, the Warm Audio WA-67 excels at recording just about anything you put it in front of, and it can instantly become your favorite choice for vocals and guitars. , drum toms and overheads, pianos, brass and strings.
At Warm, they are passionate about great studio tools and take our responsibility to our customers seriously. That means we don’t make “look-alike” gear that doesn’t perform, and we take a lot of time and effort to get as close as possible to the heart and soul of an original design. We went to great lengths to recreate the discrete circuitry of the original microphone, using boutique components throughout to ensure that nothing stood in the way of pure tube magic. The sound and vibe of the original ’67 is recreated in our Warm Audio WA-67, and we are proud to make such a high-quality microphone available to everyone at an unheard-of price.
The Capsule: The Heart Of A Microphone
Even if you cram a microphone full of premium components, if the capsule isn’t right, nothing matters as much. Knowing this, we went to great lengths to recreate the capsule from the original ’67, making sure ours perform the same way, have the same frequency response and contribute the same tough character as the original. Not only did that mean we made sure the hole pattern was identical, but we also made sure the entire assembly (including the mounting rings) was made of brass, just like the original design. It takes more time and is more expensive than using multiple types of material, but we felt it was critical to take it a step further with this mic. The results speak for themselves – the Warm Audio WA-67 sounds absolutely fantastic!
The Guts And Glory
The EF-86 tube is known in the industry for its features that are consistently flattering to audio sources, and it is one of the reasons why the original ’67 microphone is still sought after (and why some modern audio manufacturers use it in their own style). hyper expensive mics and preamps). We knew it was crucial to get absolutely right in the Warm Audio WA-67, and we are very pleased with the results.
Taking it even further, to accentuate and complement the custom capsule and EF86 tubing, we’ve used top-shelf components to complete our version of the original circuit. We used high bandwidth polystyrene capacitors, as well as polypropylene caps from Wima and a large output capacitor from Solen. Just as important in a tube design, we also used a custom large-core ransformer from Lundahl in Sweden, which plays an important role in the buttery smooth high-frequency response and tremendous three-dimensional sound of the Warm Audio WA-67 The microphone is also encased in a beautiful nickel-plated copper housing and headbasket, which provides sturdiness, added protection from external operating noise and the ultimate in audio performance.
Last but not least, the quality of the 7-pin cable connecting a tube microphone to the power supply is also paramount – it carries both audio signals and voltage for the tube on different pins, meaning it plays an integral role in the microphone performance. That’s why we partnered with high-end manufacturer Gotham Audio of Switzerland to use their high-end GAC-7 cable with the Warm Audio WA-67. An integral part of the microphone’s sound and performance, this special cable completes the WA-67 system.
