The Rupert Neve Designs 5046 Optofet is a high-quality analog dual-stage compressor and waveshaper in a compact 1U rack unit. It combines a completely redesigned FET compressor with an optimized optical compressor, giving you an exceptionally wide range of dynamic and tonal control.

Dual Stage mode allows you to use both compressors in series for maximum control over vocals, drums and buses. In addition, the OptoFET also works as a Dual Band compressor, processing low and high frequencies separately for extra precision and creative sound shaping.

The Rupert Neve Designs 5046 Optofet is a high-performance analog dual-stage compressor and waveshaper that brings together two classic dynamic principles in one compact 1U rack unit: a completely redesigned FET compressor and an optimized optical compressor. By cleverly combining these two circuits, the OptoFET offers an exceptionally wide range of dynamic as well as tonal control. This makes it perfect for tracking, mixing, mastering, sound design and live applications. In Dual Stage mode, the FET and OPTO compressors operate in series, making a common studio technique easily and consistently applicable – ideal for critical signals such as vocals, drums and buses.

In addition to serial compression, the Rupert Neve Designs 5046 Optofet can also function as a Dual Band compressor. In this mode, the low and high frequency ranges are split via a variable crossover, then each compressor independently processes its own frequency band. This offers additional creative possibilities for tone shaping and dynamics. For example, you can keep the lows tight and controlled, while the mids and highs get more definition, attack or character. The crossover frequency is continuously adjustable, so the OptoFET can be perfectly matched to the source material.

Both compressors feature fully variable attack, release, threshold, make-up gain and parallel blend, complemented by side-chain high-pass filters. Unique harmonic modes add character: GRIT transforms the FET compressor into an expressive waveshaper with additional overtones, while BLOOM in the optical compressor provides richer low-order harmonics and an audibly fuller low end. Thanks to global input and output trims and multiple gain stages, the OptoFET can be used both transparently and distinctly, without unwanted clipping of the transformer-balanced output. For stereo applications, two units can be paired in dual mono, with fully detented controls for accurate recall.
