Black Lion Bluey compressor
The black lion “Bluey” is a modified “Blue Stripe” compressor based on Chris Lord-Alge’s well-known design and design. At a certain point, certain core components became unavailable, then the engineers were forced to change the circuit and design, creating a unique compressor with a unique sound image, which has been used in countless productions and has been used in countless hit productions
Every audio engineer has stories about the special moments that happen to happen on records. We’re talking about the magic you can’t plan. It has to happen organically, and consists of pure randomness or even outright mistakes. For example, the spontaneous chatter of a vocalist between takes that adds character to a song, or a radically new audio effect discovered by a simple routing error.
The same luck sometimes shines through in the vintage gear world. Through decades of maintenance and repair, some units, such as wine, get better with time. Scarcity of original parts means engineers deviate from the original design, creating an improved, unique, custom unit.
Armed with an impeccable ear, decades of experience and an abundance of coveted gear, legendary mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge was able to recognize that one of his four 1176 Blue Stripe units sat firmly in this distinctive category. The specific unit, called “Bluey”, has a special “mojo” that shines on vocal tracks like no other.
Wishing for more channels from this gold unit, Chris reached out to the guys who know changes best – the Black Lion Audio team! Intrigued by Chris’ praise for the unit, chief design engineer, Jesus Ortiz, boarded a plane from Chicago to LA to discover what gave this Blue Stripe its edge. He found a series of mods done to the unit over the years to make it work, which miraculously cumulated into a uniquely beastly 1176! BLA analyzed the unit in meticulous detail and, in collaboration with Chris Lorde-Alge, has recreated the monster, now known as the new Black Lion Audio “Bluey!”
